① TOKYO’S FIRE SERVICE

【Fire? Ambulance? Rescue? Call 1-1-9 in English】

  • Cities, towns and villages have their own fire service in Japan. Meanwhile, the Tokyo Fire Department (TFD) protects Tokyo overall (except islands and Inagi City). You can reach the fire department at the emergency phone number 1-1-9 anywhere in Japan. In case of “fire,” “ambulance,” or “rescue,” call 1-1-9.
  • The TFD is open around the clock to the 1-1-9 calls made in English.
In case of emergency, call 1-1-9 and answer the operator’s questions:
    “Tokyo Fire Department…Fire or ambulance?”
    “What’s the address?”
    “What happened?”
“…I see. We have firefighters going there now.”

【We Have 251 Ambulances and English Language EMS Teams】

  • The TFD has 251 ambulances. In case of an accident, the ambulance standing by in the fire station nearest to the accident scene responds to the emergency. With all ambulances away from the fire stations, or in case of serious injuries/sickness, fire trucks in the accident area may come and help ambulance members.
  • Fire stations in the areas frequently visited by non-Japanese people have English language ambulance teams. (In case of too many requests for their service, they may not be available.) We are going to have more English language EMS units also for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020.

【Fire Department Services in Japan】

  • The local government covers the fire department’s expenses for EMS and other activities in Japan. You do NOT have to pay for the firefighting or ambulance services you receive from the fire department. Please be advised, however, that hospitals’ medical examinations and the transportation from the hospital back to your home are at your own cost.

② USEFUL LIFE SAFETY TIPS

  • The TFD has 10 TIPS FOR EARTHQUAKE SAFETY for the action after a quake and 10 WAYS TO PREPARE FOR AN EARTHQUAKE for damage reduction. We came up with these safety suggestions after learning lessons from past major quakes in Japan.
  • We hope the attached English advice will help you prepare for disasters.

③ TFD EVENT PROGRAM

【Spring Fire Prevention Campaign!】

  • The TFD holds the Spring Fire Prevention Campaign from March 1 (Wednesday) to March 7 (Tuesday), 2017.
  • The Fire Prevention Campaign helps you step up your skill at fire prevention and disaster damage reduction that is needed to protect lives and property from fire.
  • The Fire Prevention Campaign is the one-week event held twice every year−in autumn and spring. The autumn campaign starts on November 9, namely the Japanese fire department emergency number 1-1-9 day, and ends on November 15. In the meantime, the spring campaign starts on March 1 and ends on March 7 in commemoration of the day of the enforcement of the Fire Organization Law here in Japan.
